Research Engineers attend a core module in the first semester titled Exploring Science and Technology in Society which is conducted by the School of Sociology and Social Policy and enables them to explore and discuss ethical, cultural and environmental issues and the impact of their research. The focus of this module is group discussions which also involve other students from non-scientific backgrounds such as social science and the arts.
The international summer schools in both China and India provide an excellent platform for meeting other students, future leaders, academics and industrialists to discuss the wider ethical, cultural and environmental issues of their research.
There is a public engagement exercise as part of the Research Project Portfolio part 1 which is worth 5 credits. For the first cohort, this involved interactive exhibitions at the Shanghai Expo 2010 and the University of Nottingham’s Mayfest event for the general public. The second cohort have also participated in the Mayfest event this year and will also be doing an event at a local school around energy scenarios and careers in energy.
Communicating the acceptance of the continued use of fossil fuels, but with technologies to reduce CO2 emissions, is central to the ethos of the Centre.
